Engagement Session Prep Tips
Congratulations, you’re engaged! You have checked off your date, venue, photographer and all of the details and now you can celebrate with your engagement session! It can be intimidating to have your picture taken, let alone in a romantic way. It can be a little overwhelming since you have never had an engagement session before. What should you wear? What location should you choose? What time of day is best? What time of year? How should I do my make-up? These are all very good questions. Here are some helpful tips below!
What should I wear?
Instead of aiming to match each other, try to choose outfits and accessories that coordinate instead. Don’t be afraid to be bold! Accessorize and make your outfits your own. You can do this by adding scarves, bold necklaces, and fun shoes. Neutral colors always look nice. I highly recommend flowy dresses as they give you something to do with your hands, and look great on everyone. Most patterns are ok, as long as they are not too distracting, but try and avoid graphics.
Pinterest is your friend.
Pinterest is a great resource. You can look up portraits in the location you will be shooting at, as well as diferent color pallettes for each season, as these change in winter, summer, fall, and spring. I will also provide you with a link to pinterest board inspiration from my own engagement sessions.
Empty Your Pockets
Who wants a big bulky phone showing through their pants? Or a rubber band around their wrist?
Choose 2 to 3 Outfits
Most often couples like to have one casual and one dressier outfit. This will give your session 2 completely different looks.
Choose Comfort
Make sure you are comfortable in what you are wearing. If you are uncomfortable, it will show in the photos. Low cut tops and short shirts make posing more challenging.
Be On Time
Your photographer doesn’t just randomly choose a time, they choose the time based on the best lighting available. If you are late, that means you get less available great light.
Relax
All you need to do is show up. You aren’t expected to be a pro. I will help you every step of the way with posing and we will also have some fun!
Make it a Date
Plan something fun for after your session. Go to drinks, a movie, dinner…you are looking your best and will be feeling connected so keep the feeling going with some quality time together afterwards. : )
