It’s a quick trip to the beautiful mountain ranges of the Lost Coast and beyond. There are also amazing stretches of rugged beaches full of large, powerful rocks that have stood the test of time- just like in the movie, The Goonies!

There is nothing like a black sand beach and a beautiful sunset to make a wedding dress pop! To the north are more majestic redwood trees, as well as the popular beaches of Trinidad State Beach, Moonstone Beach, Patrick’s Point, and Wedding Rock. There is no shortage of amazing hikes and locations! Shelter Cove & Black Sands Beach

Best For: Couples who want dramatic ocean views and a true adventure

Shelter Cove sits along the Lost Coast and feels like a completely different world from the redwood forests. Rugged cliffs, crashing waves, black sand beaches, and incredible sunsets make it one of the most breathtaking elopement destinations in Northern California.
Why I Love It
Dramatic coastal scenery
Incredible sunsets
Feels secluded and adventurous
Amazing location for couples who want something different

Things to Know
Weather changes quickly.
Wind can be strong.
The drive is part of the adventure.
Black Sands Beach is managed by BLM land and specific locations may have permit requirements for ceremonies.

Local Tip: One of my favorite Humboldt elopement days combines a redwood ceremony in the morning with sunset portraits at Black Sands Beach. Couples get two completely different Northern California landscapes in one unforgettable day.

 Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park

Best For: Intimate ceremonies, river access, and couples wanting a quieter redwood experience

Located along the Van Duzen River just east of Fortuna, Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park offers a beautiful combination of towering redwoods, river views, and a more peaceful atmosphere than some of the better-known parks.

One of the park's most iconic areas is Cheatham Grove, a stunning old-growth redwood grove that feels secluded and magical while remaining relatively easy to access.

Why I Love It
Less crowded than many popular redwood locations
Gorgeous old-growth trees
Beautiful river access nearby
Convenient location for Humboldt County couples
Excellent option for intimate ceremonies
Things to Know

Grizzly Creek is one of the few redwood parks that specifically accommodates small weddings and elopements with permits. Cheatham Grove is the most requested ceremony location, but guest counts are limited because of parking and trail access. During summer months, ceremonies are limited to very small groups. Permits and fees are required, and reservations can be made up to six months in advance..

Magnificent!!!! It was a blessing to be able to work with Briar!

She set up an entire adventure day for us. The places she took us to take elopement/wedding photos were absolutely beautiful, and she knew how to capture the essence of nature around us. She has a great sense of humor and is so passionate about photography. An overall delightful person to be around. She set up a picnic for us overlooking the Pacific Ocean complete with flowers, succulents, candles, lanterns, Mr. and Mrs. glasses and chocolate cake with our initials on it! It was honestly magical. We love our photos so much and the memory of the day.
