redwood elopement planning guide

Planning a Redwood elopement is different from planning a traditional wedding.

From choosing the right grove and understanding weather patterns to finding trusted local vendors and creating a stress-free timeline, there are a lot of details to consider.

As a Humboldt County local and Redwood elopement photographer, I've created this free guide to help couples confidently plan an unforgettable wedding experience among the giant redwoods.

You can elope in a private ceremony surrounded by a cathedral of redwood trees. After your ceremony is complete, I can show you what else the famous Humboldt County has to offer. Looking for an adventure of a lifetime? Humboldt County is one of the most beautiful places on earth. My house is 5 minutes from Humboldt Redwoods State Park and the famous Avenue of the Giants. It’s a quick trip to the beautiful mountain ranges of the Lost Coast and beyond. There are also amazing stretches of rugged beaches full of large, powerful rocks that have stood the test of time- just like in the movie, The Goonies!

We won't be far from the famous black sands beach of Shelter Cove; the tiny sea-side home of Northern California’s most remote coastline. No overcrowded beaches here! There is nothing like a black sand beach and a beautiful sunset to make a wedding dress pop! To the north are more majestic redwood trees, as well as the popular beaches of Trinidad State Beach, Moonstone Beach, Patrick’s Point, and Wedding Rock. There is no shortage of amazing hikes and locations! If you are looking for someone who can guide you every step of the way in your elopement process, who knows the ins and outs of the redwood forests, who loves shooting wedding days that are all about the couple and their genuine love for each other... then you have come to the right place! What are you waiting for? Complete the contact form at the bottom of this page and lets get to planning your ultimate adventure elopement! I will be your trusty tour guide for the adventure of your lifetime! From the redwoods to the sea! Best of all? You will have some pretty epic photos to show for it.

Local Knowledge You Can't Find on Google

A local photographer knows the Redwoods like the back of their hand.
They know:
Which groves receive the best light at different times of day
Which locations are often crowded and which are hidden gems
Where to find towering old-growth trees, fern-lined trails, and epic overlooks
Which locations require hiking and which are easily accessible
How weather patterns move through the coast, mountains, and forests
This local knowledge helps create a smoother experience and more beautiful images.

Experience Photographing in Redwood Light

The Redwoods can be one of the most challenging environments for photography.
Deep shadows, bright sunbeams, fog, and dense tree cover require a photographer who understands how to work with difficult lighting conditions.
A photographer who specializes in off-camera flash can create vibrant, colorful images while still preserving the natural beauty and mood of the forest. Instead of dark or muddy photos, you'll receive images that showcase the magic of the Redwoods while keeping your skin tones beautiful and natural.

Local Means Flexibility

When your photographer lives nearby, there are advantages that traveling photographers simply can't offer.
Because there are no flights, hotels, or long-distance travel plans involved:
Timeline adjustments are easier
Weather changes can be accommodated
Last-minute planning is less stressful
There are no travel fees
Flexibility is especially valuable in the Redwoods, where weather conditions can change quickly.

Someone Who Can Pivot When Things Go Wrong

Wedding days rarely go exactly according to plan.
Maybe the bouquet arrives late.
Maybe fog rolls in unexpectedly.
Maybe a location becomes crowded.
Maybe the weather changes.
A local photographer knows how to adapt quickly and find solutions without panic.
Sometimes the difference between stress and a great experience is simply having someone by your side who knows the area well enough to pivot confidently.

Magnificent!!!! It was a blessing to be able to work with Briar!

She set up an entire adventure day for us. The places she took us to take elopement/wedding photos were absolutely beautiful, and she knew how to capture the essence of nature around us. She has a great sense of humor and is so passionate about photography. An overall delightful person to be around. She set up a picnic for us overlooking the Pacific Ocean complete with flowers, succulents, candles, lanterns, Mr. and Mrs. glasses and chocolate cake with our initials on it! It was honestly magical. We love our photos so much and the memory of the day.
