The Magic of a Redwood Elopement: An Intimate Wedding in Northern California

There’s a kind of quiet in the redwoods that is hard to explain until you’re standing underneath them.

The air feels cooler. Fresher. The sounds of the outside world seem to disappear beneath towering trees that have been standing for hundreds — sometimes thousands — of years. You can hear the wind moving through the branches above you, the soft crunch of the forest floor beneath your feet, and maybe the distant sound of birds somewhere in the canopy.

And for a little while, it feels like the entire forest belongs to just the two of you.

That is one of the things I love most about photographing redwood elopements in Northern California.

There is no ballroom full of people waiting for you to do something next. No complicated timeline pulling you from one moment to another. No pressure to entertain a room full of guests.

Sometimes it really is just the couple, their photographer, and the redwoods.

And there is something incredibly romantic about that.

Humboldt County Is Made for Magical Elopements

Here on the Northern California coast, we are incredibly lucky to have some of the most beautiful redwood forests in the world.

Humboldt Redwoods State Park is one of those places that almost doesn’t feel real when you first step into it.

The massive trees, lush green ferns and quiet forest trails create an incredible backdrop for an intimate wedding or elopement.

And then there is the legendary Avenue of the Giants, winding through some of the most spectacular redwoods in Humboldt County.

There are endless little places along this stretch of Northern California where you can step away from the road and suddenly find yourself surrounded by giant trees and peaceful forest.

It’s beautiful, romantic and wonderfully uncomplicated.

One of my favorite things about planning an elopement in Humboldt County is that your day doesn’t necessarily have to be only about the forest.

There are little things photographs can’t completely capture.
